In our last preschooler class, we used a four panel comic format to tell stories. This activity helps with language development and artistic development. Please see PDF freebie at the end of this post for your copy of the comic panels. You’re welcome to keep it for your personal use with your child.

Wonder Door: The Gateway to Learning

Our little inquisitive learners were wondering last week during circle time whether or not “cockroaches can hop”, so I wrote their question down and stuck it on our Wonder Door. It is a great idea to start something like that in your home. In our world full of immediate Ai answers and instant gratifications, delaying answers like this and the act of wondering and searching for answers on their own will further fume their curiosity and love of learning. We later discovered that although pretty much all cockroaches don’t leap, there is a species of roaches called “leaproach” that is actually quite a good jumper! Please see picture below. The discovery just reminds me that we, the adults, are not walking encyclopedias. It’s is okay, and often more fascinating, to discover alongside our children.

Watch this YouTube video of a South African leaproach jump in slow motion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnuExrjOjfM

Other questions we’ve been wondering about:

What do sea dragons eat and what animals like to eat them?

Why do we have toes?

Are there alligators or crocodiles in Florida?

Who lives in the Taj Mahal?

What happened to the nose of the Great Sphinx?

These are all questions that have sprung organically through my conversations with the children. It’s so much fun to ponder on the wonders of life.

Power of Observation

Observation, Observation, Observation!

Observation is one of the most valuable tools for understanding your child’s growth, interests, and learning needs.

When you observe with curiosity and without judgment, (Yes, I know that you are so proud of your baby!) you can gain a clearer picture of where your child is in their development, what activities they enjoy most, and what skills they may be ready to learn next.

What you notice during observation can help guide small changes at home. For example, if your child has difficulty fastening small buttons, you might provide opportunities to practice by putting their button-up shirts on their favorite teddy bear or start by practicing with clothing with larger buttons and other jobs that help with strengthening the pincer grips. It is always important to present the activity to them first in a slow and patient manner (More on presentations later). Giving children chances to practice challenging skills in a relaxed, low-pressure way helps build confidence and independence. Practicing observation helps shift our perspective from subjective to objective, allowing us to better support our children’s individual paths.

Our Playgroup Class time is also a wonderful opportunity to observe your child. Notice which activities capture their attention, which social skills they are working on, and what new challenges they seem ready for. These observations can help you support their learning and development at home.

In our busy day-to-day lives, it’s easy to zip through routines and miss the quiet ways our little ones are growing. When we take time to watch them with intention, we can better understand where they may need support. You can subscribe to our newsletter for a free observation form–scroll to the very bottom of our website. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions with how to begin observing your child. I’m always happy to help.

Ms. Danni

comic masterDownload

Storytelling through Comic Making Our last two weeks of classes have been filled with inquisitive learning and creativity.
